Janet Jackson as airline fashionista
Las Vegas Strip goes airborne
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Many major air carriers have recently updated—or soon
will update—the look of their cabin crews. Julien Macdonald is the
designer of British Airways' new togs. Christian Lacroix will
design new uniforms for Air France. Delta Air Lines is counting on
Richard Tyler while Delta's low-fare entry, Song, has contracted with
Kate and Andy Spade for design assistance. And the list goes on: Peter
Morrissey for Qantas, Yoshie Inaba for Japan Airlines, Stan Herman for
JetBlue, Gabriele Strehle for Lufthansa.
Now Vegas Air, which touts itself as "The Official Airline of the
Las Vegas
Strip," has announced that its flight attendants will sport uniforms
designed by Janet Jackson.
In revealing the new wardrobe, Charlene Responick, spokesperson for
Vegas Air, cited a study done for the airline by the consultancy of
Nipelle and Ringe which found that 88 percent of the passengers
departing on the airline from McCarran Airport were asleep in their
seats prior to takeoff.

"Based
on the results of the study," said Responick, "we are updated our
uniforms for reasons of passenger safety. We believe that the new
uniforms will capture the attention of the passengers—especially the
male passengers—and help them to focus on the pre-flight safety
announcements."
Little of the specifics of the new uniforms were announced except that
Ms. Jackson, in a tribute to her brother, will include white socks and a
spangled glove to be worn on each attendant's right hand. "Again for
safety reasons," noted Responick, "the socks will be visible in the dark
and the glittering glove is better for indicating the location of the
emergency exits."
The new uniforms are expected to be introduced on May 16—not
coincidently Liberace's birthday.
